Our story

Why an ark?

On shelter, an old tree, and a grandmother whose arms were always open.

Shelter is measuredby how many it holds.

Every old story about a flood is, underneath, a story about a house. The waters rise, the familiar world goes under, and what saves the living is not a wall, nor a city, nor an army. It is a vessel built by hand, with room inside.

The ark of Noah is remembered for the rain. But read again, and the remarkable thing is not the storm; it is the passenger list. It carried no kings and no treasure. It carried pairs — every creature that crept and crawled, and one family. It was not built to conquer the flood. It was built so that those inside could wait it out together, in a kind of peace that the world outside had lost.

i.The vessel

We have come to think of shelter as something we buy for ourselves. The ark suggests an older idea: that a shelter is defined by how many it can hold, and by the quiet it keeps while the weather does what weather does.

Letícia Klemens returned to that story more than once. What stayed with her was not the punishment but the harmony — a crowded, improbable household, held together in calm while everything else was moving. She wanted a place like that for her family: somewhere you arrive and, without deciding to, set down the problems you carried up the road. A place of peace, and of plenty.

A shelter is measured not by its walls, but by how many it can hold.

ii.The tree

Before the house there was the tree. It is the first ever to have stood on these nineteen hectares, and no one can say who planted it — perhaps no one did. It has watched the Lebombo hills turn green and gold more times than anyone has counted.

When the main house was built, it was set beside the tree rather than in its place. It is a small decision that says a great deal. To build well is to begin with what was here before you, and to make room rather than to clear it. The tree is in our emblem for that reason. It is the oldest resident of the quinta, and still the one who decides where the shade falls.

iii.The grandmother

There is a second reason for the name, and it is the one that matters most. Arca was the name given to Letícia’s grandmother — a woman who kept her arms open to the whole family, and who spoiled every one of them with the only gift that does not run out.

A grandmother’s house is the first ark most of us know. It is where the rules of the outside world are briefly suspended; where there is always another chair, another plate, another hour. We do not remember such houses for their furniture. We remember them for the feeling of being expected.

iv.The quinta

Quinta Arca, founded in 2020, is an attempt to keep that feeling alive in a place, so that it can outlast any one of us. The house in Namaacha is not a hotel pretending to be a home. It is a home that has decided to open its doors.

So come as you are. Bring the people you love, or come alone and let the quiet keep you company. Stay a weekend, or long enough to forget what day it is. The tree will be here when you arrive, and here when you return.

Quinta Arca is a family. You are welcome to be part of it.
