Discover Namaacha

The town in the clouds.

High on the Lebombo range, on the border with Eswatini. Maputo’s summer retreat for more than a century.

Cool air.Old hills.

Namaacha lies some eighty kilometres west of Maputo, where the coastal plain rises into the Lebombo mountains and meets the border with Eswatini. Its altitude gives it what the capital lacks in summer: cool evenings, clean air, and a green that lasts.

From around 1916 until the 1960s, families from Lourenço Marques (as Maputo was then called) climbed these hills each summer to escape the heat of the coast. They built villas and gardens, walked to the waterfall, and gave the town a reputation it still carries: the place you go to breathe.

The town is also known for its springs, where Namaacha mineral water is bottled, and for the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima, which draws pilgrims from all over the country.

Things to do

Days out from the quinta.

In town

The Namaacha Waterfall

The town’s best-known landmark: a waterfall set in green rock and trees, and the classic Namaacha picnic. Go in the morning, when it is quiet.

In town

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima

One of the most important places of Catholic pilgrimage in Mozambique. Thousands walk to Namaacha each year for the May pilgrimage.

In town

The colonial church and old town

Whitewashed churches and the summer villas of the families who came up from Lourenço Marques in the first half of the twentieth century.

All around

The Lebombo Mountains

The long ridge that forms the border with Eswatini. Footpaths, viewpoints and birdlife, with the coastal plain spread out to the east.

Next door

The Eswatini border

The Namaacha – Lomahasha border post makes the quinta a natural first or last night on a journey through Eswatini and on to South Africa.

On the way

Boane and the Pequenos Libombos Dam

A pleasant stop on the road from Maputo: the reservoir set among the low hills of the Pequenos Libombos.

About 80 km

Maputo

The capital’s markets, galleries, restaurants and Indian Ocean waterfront are an easy day trip, and the drive back is easy too.

When to come

Cool in summer, cold in winter.

From May to August the days are clear and mild and the nights are cold. These are the best months for walking. From November to March the rains turn the hills a deep green, and Namaacha is noticeably cooler than the coast.
